Episode 3 – Bodies, Not Sizes

Bryony visits the body‑scanning lab at The Manchester University to ask a simple question: what if clothes were made for real bodies instead of standard sizes?

In this episode, Simeon Gill shows Bryony how a full‑body scan becomes more than 200 measurements that describe her body as a “relational network” – not just bust, waist and hip, but how all those dimensions and more sit together. He maps Bryony’s body directly into a pattern, flipping the usual logic of pattern cutting: instead of making a block and asking the body to fit inside it, the pattern becomes responsive to whatever body presents.

Along the way, they talk about why our current sizing system often fails – more than half the women in one scan study couldn’t match any High Street size – and what that means for waste, confidence and sustainability. For Palava, this visit is part of a broader journey: exploring whether better knowledge, better fit and more local making could help us create fewer garments that people really love and wear for longer.

Bryony also talks with researcher Dr Clare Richardson about why fit is so closely tied to how we feel in our clothes. Claire’s work shows that a well‑fitted garment can transform someone’s perception of themselves - and therefore more likely to be cared for and used.
