Why We Chose to Become a B Corp
A Framework for Better Decisions

To us, B Corp is about recognising that businesses have a responsibility beyond making a profit. It's a framework that helps companies consider the impact of every decision they make—from the way they work with suppliers and support their teams to how they care for the environment and the communities around them. It isn't about getting everything right; it's about being open, accountable and always striving to do better.
Why did we become a B Corp?
For most of Palava's life, we've relied on our gut to guide us.
Whenever we've been faced with a decision, we've tried to make thoughtful decisions that act in line with our values—for the people who make our clothes, for our customers and for the environment. Those values have always been at the heart of how we've run the business.
As we've grown, though, we've realised that good intentions aren't always enough. We care deeply about traceability and transparency, and we believe it's important to be able to demonstrate why we make the decisions we do, not just say that we do.
Like many small businesses, we've never had pages and pages of policies or dedicated compliance teams. Much of what we do has grown naturally through conversations, long-standing relationships and a shared understanding of what matters.
That made the B Corp process both rewarding and incredibly challenging.
The assessment asked us to evidence the way we work, showing that we genuinely consider the impact our decisions have on people, our communities and the environment, while also building a healthy business. For a small team, that meant a huge amount of work. We had to take everything that had lived in our heads, our conversations and our everyday decision-making and turn it into something that could be measured and assessed.
It wasn't always easy, but looking back, we're grateful that it wasn't.
Our gut is still important. B Corp has simply given it a framework.
We all want to make better decisions, but the real challenge is finding ways to build those decisions into the everyday.
Whether that's reducing waste, making better use of materials, investing in the people we work with or rethinking how we manufacture, we've come to realise that the best ideas are the ones that create value in every sense—not just commercially, but socially and environmentally too.
That's a big part of why The Hatchery exists.
The Hatchery gives us the freedom to experiment. It's where we can test ideas, challenge assumptions and ask whether there's a better way of making clothing. It's where projects that might not make immediate commercial sense are given the space to grow because we believe they have the potential to shape a better future—not only for Palava, but for the wider industry.
In many ways, becoming a B Corp feels like a natural extension of that way of thinking. It gives us a recognised framework that encourages us to keep asking questions, measuring our progress and challenging ourselves to improve. It reminds us that there is always more to learn.
We often say we want to make less, but make it better. Becoming a B Corp doesn't change that ambition—it gives us a framework to hold ourselves accountable to it.
We care deeply about being transparent in the way we work, and we hope becoming a B Corp gives our customers confidence that our values are backed up by more than our own promises. They're measured against an independent framework that challenges us to keep learning, improving and holding ourselves accountable.
For us, this isn't the end of a journey or a badge to display. It's another step towards building the kind of business we want Palava to be—one that creates beautiful clothing, supports the people behind it, cares for the environment and never stops asking how things could be done better.
Because that's really what this has always been about. Not having all the answers, but being willing to ask better questions.
