Episode 2 – The First Room
A year on from the first film, this feels like an important continuation of the promises we made.
This footage was captured last year, on the day two second-hand printing machines arrived at the Hatchery. One to print fabric, the other to fix the dyes. It marked the moment we began taking real control of our own print runs.
For us, this was always about changing the system.
The traditional wholesale/retail model forces clothing brands to decide their orders months in advance. Forecasting demand and factories requiring minimum quantities often results in over or under-ordering. Creating uncertainty and overproduction.
This room began to flip that thinking on its head.
What happens if we only print what we need?
By printing in smaller runs, we can test ideas, make only what we need, and respond more closely to what customers actually want.
Since this was filmed, the sheep print was the first from the Hatchery to make it into our customers' closets. Now, this summer, we have 6 prints, printed here at the Hatchery, by us.
Looking back at the day the machines arrived, it still feels like a real milestone.
The moment the promise started becoming practice.
Palava: Doing Things the Right Way follows designer Bryony Richardson as she faces a question at the heart of the modern clothing industry: how can you keep making the things you love when the industry itself is part of the problem? Filmmaker Jack Jackson joins her on a journey to understand what truly sustainable clothing means — meeting the people, challenges and ideas that shape every decision along the way. The series is shared through full documentary episodes and shorter Dispatches, offering an honest look at what it takes to make clothing with conscience.
